I wrote about Rihanna’s assault a few weeks back and now it seems she’s decided to get back together with Brown.  This is something I’ve been worried about, because I knew the judgments against her would fly, and it would make me sick.  I, in no way, will defend Brown’s actions.  Nor will I assert whether he can or cannot change.  The issue for me is how people are projecting their expectations and judgments on her.  And why?  I honestly cannot understand what she owes any of us.  Do we think if she stays away from Brown it will send the “right” message?  And if she gets back together with her it will be the opposite?  Who will these potential messages reach?  Why is it her responsibility?

Dumping on a young woman who was assaulted for making her own choices is low, period.

So, you know when you’re SUPER hungry and someone puts pizza in front of you and you shove too much down your gullet?

I feel sick this morning.

Penny & Harper, Sittin’ In A Tree

Penny, the Kit Cat & Photobooth.  Doesn’t she look thrilled?

Also, I am very tired and desperately in need of food, so forgive the unflattering photos.

How Did You Choose Your Jezebel Screen Name?

February 24, 2009

I started at Gawker, and my company had just gone through a re-branding.  The branding firm had developed three consumer archetypes (all women, in her 20’s, 30’s to 40’s and 50+).  I was not involved with the re-branding but weeks afterward some of our higher-ups began stopping me in the hall – “you look just like one of our new archetypes!”

Long story short, they NAMED one after me.  It was kind of embarrassing, and kind of cool, I guess.

Anyhow, when I signed up at Gawker my branding guidelines were sitting by my computer and I thought, “I’m an archetype, that will work.”

I recently changed my screen name to Penny Plastic, for obvious reasons.

What about you?

Yelp Accused of Review Extortion

February 24, 2009

I ran across this interesting post at The Consumerist last week.  It piqued my interest for a few reasons.  First of all, I’ve never liked Yelp.  I have friends who swear by it, but I am highly suspicious of ANY website providing consumer reviews.  It’s difficult to determine if reviewers have the same expectations and needs, and then there’s the simple fact that, on the whole, people tend to leave reviews when they are 1) very satisfied or 2) very disappointed with a product or service.

If claims of review extortion turn out to be not only true, but widespread and part of Yelp’s ethos, I’ll be very disappointed, but not surprised.

So, how does one research products, hotels, restaurants or services?  Is it possible to find un-biased reviews?

In a word, no.  Of course not.  Everyone has a bias.  Personally, I try to combat this by spreading out my research.  I might take a look at TripAdvisor when researching a hotel, but I take those reviews with a grain of salt.  I make a habit of hopping online and bookmarking sites for hotels, restaurants and products I see reviewed in magazines.  Ditto with blogs.  Angie’s List is a good resource, as is The Consumerist, where I generally type in a key word and check out posts/comments.

What about you?  How do you researching products and services online?  Do you trust reviews on sites like Yelp?

Hi there!  I am just starting to feel better – seriously, fuck viruses.  I am hoping to churn out a few posts today, as I am home and it’s rainy outside.  I will be drinking loads of coffee, watching Lost and working on a freelance project.  But, hopefully I can drag my ass to Google Reader and catch up on what’s been happening in the world these past few days.

Update on the job; I’m still employeed.  I think lay offs will die down for awhile.  So, this is good.  However, this means I will need to really stay focused at work and I might be blogging less.  I hope to work out some kind of schedule to keep the blog updated steadily.

I hope you’ve all had a great weekend and are enjoying your Sunday :-)

All Quiet On The Blog Front

February 19, 2009

Sorry, again, for being so quiet.  People at work are dropping like flies, I am sick (again), and I am having some….er…relationship struggles at the moment.

Take care and I will be back to writing soon.

Just a note, I promise I am not turning this into a “fashion” blog, but seeing as how it’s Fashion Week and I love fashion, you can count on seeing a lot of coverage

Happy Winter

Looking for a Valentine’s Day date?

We never named this dude, but as you can see, he’s pretty cool.

This a little something Carly, Charley and I worked on in Tahoe.  There are also many photos of me running around in the snow in my bikini.  I will not be sharing those.
